Hey guys
I really am intrigued by my English class. This class has been one of my favorite besides one of my Management classes I took my sophomore year here at NU. My English class is about communication and interpersonal relations. What makes a class fun is being able to relate to it and having the professors do real world activities with us to enhance our learning skills. I look forward waking up to go to this class at 10a.m. because there is always an activity she has planned for us to get our blood pumping. Can you imagine a job like that? Worth waking up for that gives you excitement, and makes you feel like you can’t wait to get your day started.
Well here at Northwood some of these classes actually put the spice in your life. From my previous classes and this particular class I have learned so many unwritten rules and customs of do’s and don’t. I have also learned about the true value of being other-oriented. Your more responsive to people you like and can relate too. You’re also more interested in communicating with people who are similar to you and have the same values as you. One exercise we did in class was a self-assessment test where we selected from different attributes that was most typical to our personality. Next, we had to determine what type of communication styles we predominantly use. There are four communication styles. Style one means you’re an action person. It is the WHAT, which shows results, objectives, achieving, and doing. Style two means you’re a process person. Its main focus is on the HOW, that is, strategies, organization, and facts. Style 3 means you’re a people person. That is the WHO. If you are a people person, than you tend to communicate better with all kinds of people, have balanced relationships that are healthy, and you work well in teams. Style four is the idea person. They focus on the WHY, which are concepts, theories, and innovation.
There are many communication and self-assessment test that are available on line to help people find out how they communicate. I challenge you to find out what type of communicator you are and adjust to others who are different from you. Notice what styles interact best with each other and which ones have conflict.
Have a wonderful and blessed day!
Ericka B.
