Hey rockers!

Hey everyone,

I'm Karla and I'm new to the blog. I am a freshman here at Northwood and I am an Entertainment, Sports, Promotion and Management major and I looooooove it. The things that we you can go on do from this major is amazing. Currently, I am all over the place, I work as apart of Fearless Records Street Team, I run A Static Lullaby's (Fearless Records) Street Team, I help run a small venue back home, and I am currently interning with Fusion Shows doing accounting type work.=) It may sound like a lot but it's all fun, I love my life and all the opportunities that I have been blessed with. Also, obviously, I work as a Student Ambassador for Northwood, which I love because well I love it here, so I enjoy showing people around the campus.

So if you picked up, I use the word love a lot. =) That is because I feel if you are going to do something, make sure it's something you truly care about and do that with passion behind it.

Mac and Cheese:)

So today I went to the lunch for the 50th Anniversary Celebration. For lunch they offered some different choices my favorite was the macaroni and cheese. It was deliciouss. After I ate I went into the Hach where there were many different tables set up. They also had a blow up bounce house and other blow up games. ONe of them you were strapped to velcro and had to race the person next to you..... I wanted to do it but I had just ate so I opted not to. I am excited to go to the softball game now that the weather is clearing up!

Shanty Creek Resort

I am actually sitting in a hotel room at Shanty Creek Resort as I'm writing this. Myself, along with seven other Northwood students who are also Hotel Restaurant Resort Management Majors, came up here to help with the Chef's Challenge. A ton of chefs from all over Michigan came to the resort and made all kinds of different food for the guests to taste and vote who had the best meal. I had to walk around the challenge area and pick up all the dirty beer and wine glasses and throw away the dirty dishes. There was some amazing food there. The best was the lamb ravioli. I was literally speechless when I took my first bite. I also got to try bison and quail. The quail was interesting but the buffalo was delicious! I have an hour break and then I have to go back and serve for a four course meal that the guests paid $100 for a plate. It's going to be a fun night!

50th Anniversary

Northwood is celebrating 50 years this weekend. So, that means it is going to be a busy couple of days! The festivities began today, Friday, and continue throughout the whole weekend. There will be a picnic Saturday afternoon, along with the Open House for our Admissions Department. There are home softball and baseball games on both Saturday and Sunday. An Alumni Reception along with a Domestic Violence Walk will also occur on campus. Further, Saturday evening is Northwood Night in Downtown Midland. After the Loons games, local businesses will be open late to offer discounts for this special weekend. Sunday activities include Pancakes with the President and a Honors Convocation Reception. I am proud to be a part of Northwood's rich history and proud to be a Timberwolf!

style show

Hey guys my name is Dumi,

All I had to say about this years style show was amazing! At the end of the show I just sat wanting to see more because it was so spectacular. All the designer clothes were pretty cool and even better were the student designs' which displayed alot of creativity and imagination that our fashion students have. It was also cool to see your freinds walking the runway in all different kinds of makeup and hair. Overall the style show was a great event so much so that I am looking foward to being apart of it next year.

Music Awards Update

Oh man! The music awards were so much fun! I saw Uncle Ted (Ted Nugent) play live with his original band Amboy Dukes. They haven't played in 20 years and I got to see them play! I also made some good connections with some random people. I got a hold of a an all access pass and found myself in the green room chit chatting with a lot of cool musicians from Detroit.

My cousin is an intern with Live Nation and she said that she could help me get an internship with them. I'm e-mailing Live Nation tonight and I'm very excited! I'll keep you updated on the internship.

This Thursday Jack Miller the author of Simply Success is coming to Northwood University to speak.

# 1 in Advertising

Hey guys!
This past weekend Northwood's AAF chapter competed against other colleges throughout the midwest and won first place. AAF stands for the American Advertising Federation. Throughout the school year, our chapter worked to develop an advertising campaign for Century Council against binge drinking. This campaign had a real budget and had to appeal to the client. In the end, our hard work paid off and Northwood took first place. Northwood developed a campaign centering around the idea of "ARE YOU THE ONE?" The goal of this campaign was to lower the rate of binge drinking. I am very proud of the advertising program here at Northwood and am very glad to be part of it.

The best Gift

So if you ever wanted to give that special someone a one of a kind gift. You should think outside of the box. I know I did when I work at Legoland (CA) this summer. I spent most of my summer trying to make a Lego Rose without any help. I ended up spending over $40 trying to learn how to make this piece of art. The rose itself only cost about $3.50. I know what you are thinking... That’s a lot of wasted money, but asks yourself this question how many people get a Lego rose as a gift? That’s right, not to many…….Sounds like a great Idea RIGHT………. ?

NFA (National Forensics Association)

This year I joined the speech team. It’s a lot of fun and surprisingly I don’t suck at it!! I’m actually pretty good and as the season goes on I am learning and improving. I really enjoy traveling and meeting new people from schools all over the country. This week is the NFA (National Forensics Association) competition. It’s the BIG one. Hundreds of schools from all over the country travel to one place to compete against each other. There are around 300 people in each event! This year NFA is in Spring Field, Missouri at Missouri State University. This competition is five days long… which means I get five days of vacation time from classes. YYYYAAAAYYYYY!!!! Well, it’s really not a vacation because we have rounds from about 8am to 8 or 9pm. 15 hour days are sssssssssoooooo FUN!! Lol but it is worth it. Northwood has a great team and this year we have a really good chance at coming in at the top 3 in our division. I can see it now Northwood University’s speech team ranked “number ONE” among all the small school in the country. I’m thrilled to see how everything will work out. We find out on Monday so keep us in your prayers and I’ll keep you posted.

Leftovers

Last night was the Fashion Show. I helped make the food and serve it to the public who came to watch the show. All the food was organic...well most of it was. The best part was the mini fruit pizzas. They were a sugar cookie covered in honey cinnamon frosting and a slice of organic strawberries, pineapple and bananas on top. It was delicious! There were a lot left over too so I got to take a bunch home with me....I love being an HRM major for many reasons including the fact that I get to make all kinds of food for different events, have fun and eat the leftovers!

Distinguished Teachers Luncheon

Once every year Northwood University hosts the Distinguished Teachers Luncheon. This is an event to honor and celebrate all the wonderful teachers who make such a difference in our lives. They ask students to invite their favorite teacher from high school or one of their current professors. I was sssssssoooo excited because I chose my high school teacher, Charlene Highsaw, from Northwestern high school. When I was in high school we were so close that everyone thought she was my mom… ( it didn’t help that we look so much alike. lol) It was fun to hang out with her for the day and give her a tour of the campus. She just loved the cozy feel of the campus; she was impressed with how beautiful everything was. This event was really special and it met a lot to me that Northwood faculty would take the time to plan an event, to honor the ones who are often unappreciated for their hard work and service. What is school, and how can a student get a quality education unless they have teachers and professors who are willing to go far above and beyond the duties classroom? Northwood employs some of the best educators that I have ever had. They work very hard to develop us into effective leaders, role models and ethical businesspeople.

MUSIC IS MY LIFE!!!

So I get songs stuck in my head like no other. I feel like a jukebox with songs consintly running through my head. Any phrase can start a song in my head like when I wrote jukebox, foreinger's jukebox hero came directly into my mind. I always have a song in my head while taking test and all through class. I wonder if I'm the only crazy person that does this?

This odd fact about me lead me to what I hope will be my carer path... music maretking. I'm a marketing major who loves music, what else should I be doing! I'm super excited because my aunt is heading up the Detroit Music Awards April 17 and she is going to let me help out! How sweet is that! I get to me Ted Nudgent, Kid Rock, Bob Segar and the list goes on! And my couisn has some conections with Live Nation (a concert ticket selling company) and she might be able to get an internship this summer in the D!!! So right now that's my life and it's good.

Bird Watching

Hey I'm Dumi,
Today was a great day because it had my birdwatching class which is a real cool and fun class. We got to go around campus to view birds and we saw alot of them. Some of the birds we saw were American Robins, American Crows, and Blue Jays. The best part of the whole thing is the fact that we get to go on field trips instead of sitting in class all day cause that does get kinda boring. I had a great time trying something different and learning new things about birds all at the same time. Thanks Professor Beckham!

Birthdays make you think...

I just recently celebrated my twentieth birthday. It got me thinking about how quickly time can pass. I only have five weeks left of my sophomore year, and while I am definitely ready for summer, I can't believe how these two years have flown by. College has been such an amazing experience and I have met awesome people who have truly changed my life. I probably wouldn't have met this people if I didn't go out of my comfort zone and try new things. This is one thing that I have learned. Start talking to people you wouldn't normally talk to. Join a club or go to a meeting for something that you think is of no interest to you. You never know when or where you're going to run across someone who becomes your friend. Here at Northwood, I've been so blessed to have many of these opportunities to develop new traits and experience different things. Of course I wish the time wasn't passing so quickly, but I cherish the experiences that I have had at Northwood

Business, Fashion, and Radio

This Thursday is the day! Many of our students have been working for months to create a Style Show that competes with the New York runways. The models have practiced, the student designers prepared, and now it's time to Grow, Create, Preserve!

Listen to Kelly McCracken's radio interview to hear how our education is unlike any other! And, make plans to join us on Thursday, April 16 @ 7 p.m.!

Easter already?

It seems I just got back from spring break and it is already Easter! This means it is time for midterms and to really make these last few weeks matter.

Although it is April and there is still snow on the ground... I am hoping it will start to get nice out. It is always hard for me to stay on top of my school work when the weather is nice. I would much rather go biking, play frisbee, or just enjoy the weather.

I have to remind myself that these four years really do matter and each day I don't devote time to my studies I am just hurting myself. It is important to keep up my grades for internships and opportunities that might develop in the future.

Speaking of internships I recommend starting the search for one early. I waited this year and am having trouble finding one that looks appealing. If you are interested in internships make sure to ask friends of parents etc. It is key to NETWORK!!!

Learning from the best!

In January, Northwood honored several business professionals at the annual Outstanding Business Leader awards ceremony. Present at the event, was entrepreneur and long time Northwood friend, Richard DeVos. He spoke gallantly about business, ethics, and free-enterprise.

If you are going to study business, the video below is a must see.

Money Matters:)

Hi I'm Dumi,

WOW:)..Thats all I had to say after spending a Saturday afternoon at the Money Matters workshop provided by the Life Skills Center for Leadership. I learned so much in a day about being financially free. The Uber banking system that we learned has proved to be a great way for a person who spends too much like to me to be able to keep track of my expenses as well as to help me save. There were also some funny moments such as the money burning exercise that made everyone freak out about burning the $20 bill they were told to bring. I would just like to THANK NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY for bringing this to our campus.

Hey guys!

Spring is finally here. There are only six weeks left until summer and I can't wait to move out of the dorms and into a house. Next week are midterms, then Easter break. I can't believe my first year of college is almost over. I had a great year and I am so glad I am at Northwood.

Today, there was a Career Fair on campus. There were over 5o companies. The career fair gives students the opportunity to meet with potential employers and learn about the jobs in their field of study. Almost every employer accepts resumes.

I am going to Western Michigan University this weekend with my boyfriend to visit some friends. It should be a lot of fun. Hopefully I find some time to study for midterms.
